About the Program
KidStart, innovation for children’s health program, offers Ben-Gurion University researchers and students a chance to collaborate with clinicians at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC), one of the leading pediatric centers in the US, in co-developing breakthrough medical devices and digital health solutions for improving children's health.
Collaborative teams of clinicians, engineers, researchers, and students will work together to innovate solutions to improve healthcare for children. Experts in technology and business will provide input and guidance throughout the program.

Program Specifications
Who Can Apply?
Ben-Gurion University students from the following disciplines: Medicine, Engineering, Management or Exact Sciences who are interested in developing solutions to improve children’s health are welcome to apply.
Ben-Gurion University faculty members that are interested in participating in the program, may do so either by taking part in the development teams and/or by serving as a mentor for student participants and/or by submitting their observation(s) of the existence of a gap in healthcare or care delivery, also known as an unmet clinical need. These unmet clinical needs represent opportunities to be solved with medical device or digital solutions
Funding
Funding up to $10,000 will be awarded to up to 10 teams to explore how their novel medical device or digital health applications could address a current gap in healthcare. Funded teams that will successfully create a conceptual design to solve the clinical problem and confirm the proof of principle, will be eligible to apply for additional funding up to $100,000

Information conferences in the faculties for those interested in participating in the program
Due date for BGU students/faculty members' applications
Internal review of unmet clinical needs from CCHMC. Ideas with the most potential to inspire innovative, commercial solutions will be selected.
Selected CCHMC idea submissions will be invited to schedule presentations to BGU faculty and students.
Virtual conference for all BGU and CCHMC program participants to introduce both organizations, review the stages of the program and timelines for Phase I.
Selected unmet needs ideas will be presented by CCHMC to BGU researchers and students to assess the opportunity for co-development. Students will attend a two week session during August as part of an academic course (3 credit points)
Based on the feedback from presentations, those needs with the most potential to generate commercial solutions will be selected. Collaborative teams of CCHMC clinicians, BGU engineers and researchers, as well as industry experts will be formed to begin co-development of those solutions.
With mentoring and business support, the collaborative teams will work together to identify solutions and prepare a joint application for a Phase I concept development grant.
Applications due for Phase I concept grants. Funding up to $10,000 will be awarded to up to 10 teams to explore how the novel medical device or digital health application could solve the clinical need.
Investment Committee informs all teams and announces awardees for concept grants. Funds will be disbursed in 2022.
Phase II
Applications for Phase II will begin in January 2022.
Phase I awarded teams will receive ongoing mentoring to help assess market size and competition, intellectual property protection, and how to create value to appeal to investors. Solutions that show viability will advance to the Phase 2 application process.
Request for Proposals (RFP) announced for submission for $100,000 Phase II grants. The commercialization plan required for this Phase II application will be developed with guidance from both the joint steering committees as well as outside content experts.
Applications due for Phase II commercialization grants. Funding up to $100,000 per project will be awarded to up to two projects to advance toward commercialization.
BG3C Investment Committee informs all teams and announces awardees for Phase II grants. Funds will be disbursed shortly thereafter.
